As summer is drawing to an end at SouthWind Plantation, the feeling of the upcoming hunting season is beginning to take over. It’s been a long summer, but thanks to a wet spring and afternoon showers the woods are looking better than ever.

We have been busy getting the woods ready for this fall. All of the quail, turkey, and deer food plots have been planted and are looking great. Last year we harvested 3 130-140 class bucks, and that kind of success has led us to expand our food plots. With more peas and corn in those food plots we are looking for even more quality bucks taken this year. We have also added 14 new turkey plots that are full of chufas.

The new quail courses that we added last year have had a great deal of our attention over the summer. Back in the spring we took on the task of planting wire grass on all of our new courses, along with Egyptian wheat to give them the look and beauty that SouthWind Plantation has become known for. G.J. and Skylar have also developed a new road system to make a better hunt. Our 3 duck ponds are planted in corn and are looking great for the upcoming season.

The work has not just been in the woods. Kevin has been busy around the dog kennels. We have added 8 pointer puppies and 4 cocker puppies that he has been working with to have them ready for this fall. With the response we have received about our flushing dogs it has lead us to have them available to all of our guests. The addition of the dogs has also made us have to expand our kennels to house our 80+ dogs. Greg has spent some time down at the Plantation over the summer also. He has repainted all of our hunting buggies and has them ready for hunting.

Dr. Herb, our biologist, has been tending to our ponds, and is very happy with the way they look. He is getting ready to add thousands of shad, baitfish, in all of the ponds. With 15 years of this kind of management it has lead to several 10-12 lbs largemouth bass caught and released through the late spring and summer.

There have been a large number of bookings that has started to fill up the calendar, so if you have some dates in mind we encourage your call so we can make sure you get the days you want. After you visit SouthWind you will see that we are one big family and when you leave you will be part of our family as well.
