SOUTHWIND PLANTATION WINS 2017 ORVIS WING-SHOOTING LODGE OF THE YEAR
SouthWind Plantation is honored to be the recipient of the coveted 2017 Orvis Wing-Shooting Lodge of the Year. There are currently twenty-six Orvis Endorsed Wing-Shooting Lodges in the United States. In order to receive the recognition of becoming an Orvis Endorsed Wing-Shooting Lodge, representatives of the Orvis Company must make the determination that the facility meets the necessary criteria expected in a five-star hunting lodge. It has been an honor for SouthWind Plantation to be considered a part of this exclusive list of Orvis Wing-Shooting destinations since 2005.

Every year, the Orvis Company has the difficult task of selecting one wing-shooting lodge, which exemplifies excellence to be named the Orvis Wing-Shooting Lodge of the Year. Orvis representatives make this determination through an evaluation of the following: quality of the hunt, accommodations, customer service, dining, as well as guests giving feedback about their overall experience. We are honored that Orvis has selected SouthWind Plantation to be named the 2017 Orvis Wing-Shooting Lodge of the Year.

"I hunt five to seven plantations each year and SouthWind Plantation is the finest quail hunting experience I could ask for. When I read another reviewer write "SouthWind is the best," I would have to entirely agree. I am thankful to live where some of the finest quail hunting in the world can be found within an hour of my front door. I have been hunting at SouthWind Plantation for over ten years now. I 100% agree with the other reviews that each visit there the experience gets better and better, which is something that is hard to believe when one considers that it already starts out at the top in my book. There is not one time can I recall anything but the best of experiences in every way possible. I can't think of many things that I have done in my life where I can say that. I have hunted there with children, women, novices, and well-seasoned hunters and all have had an absolutely exceptional time. Just writing this review gets me excited thinking about the next time I get to load my beloved Silver Pigeon up in the truck and head over there! The plantation cut pines are extremely well managed and it is obvious a tremendous amount of work and effort goes into keeping them that way. Just walking through those beautiful woods for a day or a weekend is a treat. On top of that the quail hunting is exceptional with strong flying birds and plenty of them. The guides and dogs are the finest around, it is readily apparent they truly love and appreciate what they do. The guides are always helping me improve my shooting and although I am already a pretty good shot it is much appreciated. After the hunt it's off to the beautiful lodge where the finest homemade Southern cooking awaits for lunch. We always eat breakfast and again that is a treat in itself. I wouldn't call the fine people who work at SouthWind, "staff,” as they sincerely treat you like family from the moment you meet them. They go out of their way to do what ever they can to ensure your time with them is everything you could expect and more. One Sunday morning many years ago on short notice my friend decided to fly in from Naples and join me for a hunt. One of the members of the SouthWind staff had a car waiting for him at the airport with the keys in it, which was something I totally didn’t expect. Forget something at home that you need? I have seen members of the SouthWind staff go into their own home and bring you their own hunting apparel. The list could go on and on about the quality of service offered at SouthWind. The hunting grounds, the birds, the guides, the dogs, the lodging, the food, the atmosphere, and especially the people are the finest you can find. I am not the kind who takes time to write reviews, but I am grateful to write this review to let you know what a fantastic place SouthWind is. Go there and you will feel the same way when you leave."
"If the Ritz Carlton had a quail hunting location, it would be at SouthWind Plantation. It's difficult to know where to begin in describing the experience of hunting at SouthWind Plantation. Every facet of the event was beyond first class. From the personal greeting of Mr. Tim Smith, the owner of SouthWind who made me feel welcome, to the personal assistance provided by the hunting guides, the level of service is beyond words. We felt at home from the moment we walked into the lodge. The other guests quickly became friends. The food was equal to any of the fine Southern dining experiences I have enjoyed throughout the "foodie" capitals of Charleston, Atlanta, Savannah, and New Orleans. Hot and aplenty, each meal is a comfortable culinary adventure and delight. (P.S. Tim, you may want to tie down those light fluffy biscuits to keep them from floating away!!) The hunting is fast, challenging, and fun. SouthWind offers a great combination of wild and released birds to challenge and hone your shooting skills. Dogs...did I mention the dogs? Or should I say "Athletes"? Quit is not a word in the SouthWind hunting dog vocabulary. A thrill to watch them work; you quickly become part of their team and you immediately anticipate their eagerness to provide you a great hunt. However, beware of Mike the pointer; if you miss a bird he points, you will get a stare from him!! And if there is harder working flusher than Max the English Cocker Spaniel, I dare you to bring him or her to SouthWind. I'm still not sure how God packed that much personality, energy, and intelligence into a 20-pound package. My only complaint...is having to leave. See you and the great SouthWind Plantation team next year! "
"From the moment that I arrived at SouthWind Plantation I was treated like a member of the family. The entire staff made sure that I had everything I needed to make my first trip an unforgettable experience. If I asked for anything it was provided. The word "no" is not in the vocabulary of anyone there. The food was outstanding; Chef Billy does a superb job catering to everyone’s palate. He makes sure that every meal is exactly what you would expect to find on the table of any Southern family, giving you a true South Georgia experience. The guides have an expansive knowledge of quail habitat and dog work. They all have a love for the outdoor experience. Randy Erving was my guide for my entire trip, his Southern hospitality and his many years of hunting experience made this a trip I will never forget. Randy’s skills as a guide are exceptional, his dog work is unsurpassed, and the birds fly better than I have ever seen. And, best of all for any hunter, I have never bagged so many birds on any trip. The numbers are amazing. I am already counting the days to my return."
