South Georgia Quail Hunting
There is no better place to experience the thrill of a quail hunt than in Southwest Georgia. SouthWind Plantation, which is located in the bob-white quail belt of Southwest Georgia consists of rolling hills and long leaf pine, which makes for the perfect conditions to experience quail hunting at its finest. SouthWind Plantation is one of only twenty-four Orvis Endorsed Wing-Shooting destinations in the world where guests are offered the opportunity to experience first-class professional guides, witness champion bird dog work, and enjoy the luxury of five star accommodations.
Georgia quail hunting season begins on October 1st and continues until March 31st. The morning hunt will last for three hours, followed by lunch, and a three hour long afternoon hunt. Each hunt is orchestrated by one of SouthWind’s professional guides, who will have between six and eight pointing dogs and a flush dog. Quail hunters commonly use SouthWind’s specially designed jeeps for transportation purposes. Each one of our custom built hunting jeeps pulls a specially designed kennel, which can hold up to six hunters. SouthWind Plantation also provides mule-drawn wagon hunts for those who wish to experience hunting the way it was done over one hundred years ago.
What Should be Expected on a Quail Hunt?
Many guests may wonder, “What am I responsible to bring on a quail-hunting trip?” Guests are allowed to bring any kind of hunting gear they would like for their own personal use. However, SouthWind can accommodate any need that our guests might have. We offer over and under shotguns that are available for our guests to rent upon arrival. Also, SouthWind is happy to furnish an orange hunting vest and hat to our guests for safety purposes, which allows hunters the ability to identify their fellow hunters in the field. On all of our jeeps, SouthWind’s professional guides will have shells, shooting glasses, and earplugs enabling our guests to hunt in a relaxed atmosphere. We encourage our guests to bring their own personal dogs. However, it is not a necessity, SouthWind takes great pride in using our champion bird dogs in the field. Also, for guests who are in need of the proper hunting attire, SouthWind has the ability to outfit our guests through the use of our Orvis Pro-Shop.
SouthWind Plantation recommends guests to pre-schedule hunting dates to enjoy the “ultimate hunting experience” five to six months in advance. The staff at SouthWind is known for being knowledgeable, courteous, and helpful when it comes to personalizing the right hunting packages for our guests. Many guests arrive at SouthWind wondering, “What will it be like to experience a quail hunt?” However, many of our guests leave SouthWind thinking of the memories they were able to share and their plans to return for the next season. We are proud to call these guests members of our “SouthWind Family”.
