Hunting / Guns/ Ammo

What types of shotguns and ammunition do you allow?
SouthWind has implemented new regulations for the continued safety of our guests, employees, and dogs. Starting this season, please see the following changes.

1. No semi-automatics are allowed in the quail field. (exceptions apply to dove and pheasant tower shoots.) If unsure, please call.
2. Break action guns ONLY!
3. 12g shotguns are no longer allowed for quail hunting.

What other gun information do we need to know or instruction do you offer?

1. Only two shooters are allowed on the ground at one time
2. No shooters are allowed under the age of 12.
3.  All hunters must have completed a certified hunter safety course.
4. Guns must be carried in an open position when not on point.
5. The muzzle must be pointed in the air while in use.
6. We require all of our guests to watch a safety video prior to their first hunt.

Do you rent shotguns or sell ammunition?
Guests may bring their own ammunition and shotgun or use one of the rentals available onsite for $50 a day.
We offer 20, 28, and .410  gauge over-under for rental and stock .410, 28, 20 gauge shells – 7 1/2

Do I need a hunting license from the state of Georgia to hunt at Southwind?
Yes, the Department of Natural Resources requires all of our guests to purchase a Shooting Preserve License directly from the State of Georgia. Please visit gooutdoorsgeorgia.com to purchase a Shooting Preserve License.

Is there a limit on how many birds I can shoot?
There is no limit to the number of birds you can shoot. 24 birds per jeep per full day or 20 birds per jeep per half day are included in the cost of your hunt.

During what months are you open for guests?
Our quail hunting season begins October 1st and goes through March 31st. Dove season dates vary and typically start in September and turkey season is in April. We offer fishing year-round. Please call for further inquiries about the hunts we offer and the time periods available.

What kinds of dogs will accompany me on the hunt?
We have English Pointers, German shorthair pointers,  and English Cocker Spaniels all ready to find every last bird and make your quail hunting experience the best it can possibly be. Click here to learn more about what makes our dogs the best in the business.

What is the hunter/guide ratio?
There is a maximum of 4 hunters per Jeep, but we recommend 2 to a jeep.

Do you have a tipping policy?
Average guide tips are around $150 per jeep per hunt.

What should I wear on the hunt?
For your comfort and safety, we recommend wearing briar pants or briar chaps, a blaze orange hunting vest, and broken-in boots. We also encourage our guests to dress in layers for cool mornings and mild afternoons. We will provide guests with orange hats upon check-in and we have vests available to borrow.

Lodging

When is check-in/check-out?
Check-out is at 9 am prior to morning hunts after breakfast. Check-in is at 4:00 pm. We understand there may be some special circumstances where a guest may need to shower after their am hunt. We do ask that you have all of your luggage and other items gathered up and ready for checkout so that our housekeeping crew can begin to turn the lodge. Please let us know of any special requests during your booking.

What if I arrive for an afternoon hunt prior to the 4:00 pm check-in time?
We ask that any guests planning on hunting prior to check-in time, that they arrive ready to hunt and in their gear. We do have bathrooms and changing rooms that can be used to change into the proper attire.

Transportation

What is the closest airport to fly into?
The closest public airport is in Tallahassee, Florida and then Panama City, Florida and the closest private airport is Bainbridge, Ga.

Do you provide transportation to and from the airport?
We can provide transportation for guests upon request for a small fee.

Do you provide transportation for guests during the stay?
We can provide guests with vehicles during their stay if needed, we also have transportation provided to guests to be chauffeured to and from hunts, lodging, and meals
